From Quarry to Kitchen: How Natural Stone Makes Its Journey Safely

Natural stone slabs—like marble, quartzite, and exotic granites—are heavy, fragile, and high-value. At Terra Stone, we proudly source these materials from around the world and deliver them to your project with care and precision. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we transport these slabs internationally by sea and domestically by truck, ensuring they arrive in pristine condition.

International Shipping: The Long Voyage

Natural stone slabs typically begin their journey in countries like Brazil, Italy, and Greece, where they’re quarried and cut. From there, they’re carefully inspected and packed—either in reinforced wooden crates or strapped securely to specialized A-frames—to withstand the stresses of ocean freight. These containers are designed to minimize movement and protect the surface during transit.

In some regions, like Brazil’s Espírito Santo, new systems like “StoneLift” allow entire pallets of stone to reach U.S. ports in as little as 21 days—reducing transit times significantly while maintaining safety.

Handling Heavy Slabs with Precision

Once the slabs arrive at a U.S. port, they’re offloaded using cranes and forklifts equipped with specialized attachments or clamps. Loading onto flatbed trucks requires A-frames with sturdy frames and cushioned supports to hold slabs upright and prevent chipping or cracking.

Domestic Transport: Safe Road Delivery

During trucking, it’s crucial that slabs are securely strapped—not too tight to risk damage, but firm enough to avoid shifting. Oversized or overweight loads require special permits, and drivers must plan routes carefully to avoid violations or delays.

Warehouse Expertise and On-Site Safety

At our Schiller Park warehouse, slabs are stored upright on A-frames or racks designed specifically for stone. Handling the slabs—whether moving them into place or loading for customer pickup—is always done using forklifts, slab lifters, or suction equipment, following strict safety protocols to avoid injuries or damage.
